Soccer Qualifications

Jack holds the highest level of licenses granted by the US Soccer Federation, an 'A' License, and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Premier Diploma.

Jack was one of first soccer players for Simsbury, CT High School in the first years of its program. He later played 4 years at Grove City (PA) College, and about 10 years of amateur play in Connecticut and Colorado. Jack coached high school soccer for 10 years in Connecticut, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, and Virginia. He subsequently moved up to the college level, coaching 1 year as an assistant at George Mason University and 6 years as head coach at Maine Maritime Academy before coming to Saratoga Springs where he coached the Skidmore College men’s team for 13 years.

Coaching Philosophy

The basis of the game is the ability of individual players and a team to hold possession while attacking an opponent. At the same time a pragmatic approach is important, recognizing one's own strengths/weaknesses and assessing the opponents to determine how best to defend and attack an opponent. I train the ideal, but coach recognizing the practical.

Favorite Soccer Memory

As a player it was competing in summer tournaments in the mountain towns of Colorado, Aspen, Steamboat Springs, and Vail with a wonderful group of players.

As a coach it has been watching players and teams that I have coached become better at the game.

Favorite Soccer Team, Coach or Player

I enjoy watching many teams play, from the smooth passing of Barcelona and its core of skill between Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi, to the more powerful play of Manchester United with Rooney, Vidic, and Van Persey. I am enjoying watching Major League Soccer teams evolve and become more skillful and less dependent on athleticism. I hope to be doing the same with the players and teams I coach.

Just for Fun

Having retired from professional life as Director of Museum and Archives for the National Soccer Hall of Fame, I enjoy volunteering in the community, most often at Caffe Lena and Saratoga Hospital, and am a bicycle rider, having ridden multiple long distance rides, including riding from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh along the C&O Canal and the Great Allegheny Passage.
